A lone bulezau.

Bulezaus are 9 foot tall, affection-craving eudemons that appear to be goat-headed humanoids. They are slow witted and wild and utterly preoccupied with their pursuit of love and friendship. Planar scholars often refer to them as "Celestial Baphomet's perfect children".

Description[edit | edit source]

Bulezaus have huge ram's horns and their feet end in claws. They have a fragrant, pleasing smell and their long, serpentine tails end in bushy clumps of feathers that are said to be so soft that they can cure injuries. The touch of these tails has on more than one separate occasion been described as "like a lover's kiss". Witches know a method to gather these feathers, which frequently shed, so that they may be used to stuff what have come to be known as witchpillows (without the special method, the feathers disappear after a few moments in the material plane).

Various phenomena manifest around bulezaus. Simply being around one imbues a creature with positive energy, healing its wounds (this notably does not harm undead, though it does turn them unless the bulezau actively suppresses this effect) and reducing any pain, emotional or physical, that it is suffering. The more bulezaus that are nearby, the stronger this effect is. In addition, small eudemons resembling butterflies are known to appear around them and they are able to summon groups of rose dretches in a pinch.

They are disproportionately strong, able to wield weapons designed for creatures twice their size or more, and once a day are able to emit an immense cry powerful enough to blast holes in stone walls. They carry huge ranseurs that they wield with finesse and though they despise needless aggression, they are brutal combatants and will dispatch enemies with ease - although they must first be convinced that an entity is not only an enemy, but worth the effort of destroying, which is another thing altogether.

Behaviour[edit | edit source]

Bulezaus are deeply amorous and caring. They seek out those fighting some kind of internal battle, which they can sense instinctively through their telepathic empathy. Once nearing someone of that sort, they will offer their target an "empathetic ear and understanding heart". They are known to lose interest rapidly and quickly abandon the area when this does not work out.

Though inherently talkative, they are bestial creatures and their understanding of complex terminology is limited. They value direct language and tire easily of lies and discursiveness. To bulezaus, any activity other than sharing tender truths and heartfelt sentiments is a waste of time, and they have no time for subtlety, modesty or prevarication. When a bulezau finds someone it wants to talk with, it will tell them directly and if rebuffed quickly try to find someone else.

It is always important to remember when dealing with a bulezau that though they are capable of empathising with almost anyone, and always seem to know the right thing to say, they don't generally have any idea what is going on most of the time. A group of bulezaus that misunderstand a situation are liable to misunderstand it dramatically wrong, which can often lead to a dangerously chaotic scenario. A battle, in particular, might seem to a bulezau to be a good time to appear and talk about feelings, due to the emotional tension in the air.

Sometimes, a bulezau seeks physical intimacy with someone they have been speaking with. Accepting the advances of a bulezau can be an unpredictable affair, since bulezaus can at times far underestimate their own strength. It is rarely dangerous to seek intimacy with a bulezau, however, due to their healing aura.

A bulezau values tenderness above all else and cannot handle being responsible for causing emotional pain to others. In fact, bulezaus that cause upset or distress to others have been known to spiral into a wild panic, flinging themselves from buildings or running at walls head-first. Since bulezau travel in fairly sizeable groups, this can cause a chain reaction that may lead to quite a mess as bulezau begin charging around in confusion and bewilderment.
