Puzzlet
Puzzlets are a water-dwelling eusocial species endemic to the oceans of Zorsarcos with rigid, doll-like torsos and heads and long, branching tentacles. Air-breathing, they travel in groups known as crews on the surface of the water in 0.8-3 metre long vessels known as ships that are actually air-filled polyps growing from a specialised member of the crew. There are around 15-125 individual Puzzlets per crew, one of which is known as the captain.
They control and maintain the course of the ship by casting spells, the components of which involve the solving of "puzzles", which appear as multicoloured lights in front of the puzzlet. The puzzlets demonstrate varying degrees of skill at casting each spell, and those that repeatedly fail are thrown off the ship and quickly replaced by the captain, who lays an egg on the spot and uses a spell to hatch it into a full-grown puzzlet.
Puzzlets are around 4.6cm tall and hunt any prey smaller than their ship (including smaller puzzlet crews), weakening their prey with simple, long-ranged missile spells before closing in with close-range touch spells.
